Do you have a couch I have to lie down on?
Traditionally, psychoanalysis was conducted with the patient lying on a couch while the therapist was seated out of view. While there are sound theoretical reasons for this arrangement, we've found that it is more important that you be comfortable. We have made every effort for New Leaves Clinic to be a relaxing, serene place for you to visit. There are chairs, couches and chaise lounges in different rooms. The procedure for seeking services is the same as for adults (see above): If you decide to use your insurance, contact your benefit company by calling the number on the reverse of your insurance identification card. Make it clear that you would like your child or adolescent to be seen by Dr Mills (Dr Roll does not see children). Follow their instructions.

Do you prescribe medicine?
A psychologist is not qualified to prescribe medicine (although this might change in the near future). However, I work closely with many local physicians (psychiatrists, pediatricians, family practitioners, neurologists etc.

Will you tell my family or other people what I talk about?
Licensed psychologists are bound by strict ethical standards set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA). The ethical code that psychologists follow is more strict than that of medical doctors. This means that your psychologist has vowed to uphold your confidentiality, and is legally bound to retain your privacy (much like a lawyer or priest).

Do you just work with the child? Are the parents involved?
The initial assessment is almost always conducted with at least one parent and the child (or children). Exceptions to this might be if sensitive issues that the child should not know need to be discussed (but this is less frequent than you might think) or if the client is a teenager who might be able to present the primary issues without the parents being present. No, I do not believe this to be true. However, the answer depends upon who you listen to.

Am I a failure if I go to a psychologist (or am I a failure as a parent if I take my child)?
No, I do not believe this to be true. However, the answer depends upon who you listen to. Unfortunately, many in our society still view a visit to a psychologist as a sign of some inherent weakness or deficiency in the person. The good news is that many others are seeing this view as outdated and even foolish. I suggest that consulting a psychologist be viewed the same as when one visits another professional, for example, a physician.I have written elsewhere about the profound implications surrounding the the process of diagnosis in general, and the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) in particular. In summary, however, there is little justification for the notion that ADD is something you either have or don't have, little justification for believing that attention difficulties can necessarily be related to a single cause, and little justification for believing that medicine alone can solve the problem. All contact with your psychologist is held in the strictest confidence. A psychologist may divulge information only with your written consent, or in cases of imminent danger to yourself or another person. Your treatment file will also be available to the payor (i. - 15431
