Jean Claude Van Damme Is Back

By Kasey Morton

I know that you've heard of this action star. Jean Claude Van Damme, or JCVD, was once one of the biggest stars in the worldnot that we ever took him very seriously. For years, he's lingered in the straight to video world. But now we're being forced to take him seriously.

For the newest generation of action move fans: Jean-Claude Van Damme is a world-famous action hero. He started training in martial arts at the age of 11 before he retired from active competition to pursue a movie career. His record was 18-1 (18 knockouts).

Just as a side note: He had a rematch with Patrick Teugels, the only man that he loss to, before he left competition. The rematch was halted under the 2-minute mark because Van Dame was so aggressive that it was too much for Teugels.

Van Damme is known for his impressive physique, as well as being muscular and handsome. In almost every Van Damme film, he executes a masterful split. The action heroes he portrays usually have a softer character than those portrayed by Schwarzenegger or Stallone. Van Damme's worldwide appeal is unchallenged, yet he never achieved the coveted blockbuster status in America.

His new film, appropriately titled JCVD, is garnering real attention on the festival circuit. Van Damme plays a character not far distant from his real life persona. More than just a comedy, the movie promises to give us real depth of character.

Van Damme is getting real attention for his nuanced performance. This comes as a surprise to most film critics, given the fact that even in his hey day, he was hardly seen as an acting talent. But apparently, there were sides of JCVD that we were never allowed to see.

Adding to a great performance, the cinematography in the film looks amazing. The trailer, found at www.apple.com/trailers/independent/jcvd/, shows us a film with a hipster/retro look, accompanied by a groovy sound track.

It looks good. There's a funny scene in the trailer where Van Damme is making a movie with a young Asian director. He cries, 'I'm 47 years-old and it's very hard for me to do everything in one shot.'

A routine visit to the bank lands the actor smack dab in the middle of a bank heist. The movie seems to promise some action sequences where the famously limber 'Muscles from Brussels' gets to show off his moves in a real life scenario. The movie looks fun and substantial. I can't wait to see it. - 15431
