Good SEO Requires Crafty Inclusion Of Keywords

By Julie Johnson

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) refers to a series of techniques by which websites are deliberately promoted through tactics designed to gain the attention of search engines, thus boosting the sites to the top of the search engine lists. Small organizations rely on an inhouse webmaster or often an outside 'website guy' to maintain their site, but larger companies may employ entire departments to work specifically on web marketing and SEO. Most new webmasters and web developers recognize the importance of using SEO but many don't know how to start the process.

One important step in SEO is called keyword research, and it might be the single most important step. In order to benefit from SEO, you'll need to make sure that you write and develop web content that revolves around a particular set of keywords.

When writing an internet article, for example, you will want to make sure you repeat your keywords several times, while avoiding using them excessively or in places where they dont belong. Proper SEO development involves a careful balance of using the keywords enough times to get your point across, but without making your content sound too artificial.

There are a few tricks that many SEO professionals use with regard to keywords. Sometimes if you use synonyms the message will be the same, but the engine will read it differently. Capitalization of words is another technique to gain attention. Each of us has misspelled a word when doing a web search and have ended up on some strange webpage. This technique of misspelling words deliberately is also used by web developers to attract attention to their sites.

The challenge of determining what keywords to choose is up to you. If you think about it, you likely know best what terms people will use if they are searching for your website. There are some search engine sites which will provide you with lists, but the answer ultimately remains with you. Test some out and if they don't perform well, then tweak the list and keep tweaking until you get the results you want. - 15431
